Terms of Service

Last updated: June 30, 2026

Welcome to Chavruta, a digital Beit Midrash for shared Torah study. These terms constitute an agreement between you and the operator of the service, and they govern your use of the website and the app. Please read them carefully. Use of the service constitutes full acceptance of these terms.

1. Acceptance of the Terms and Eligibility

By accessing or using the service, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to these terms and to the privacy policy. If you do not agree, please refrain from using the service. You must have the legal capacity to enter into this agreement, or use the service with the permission and guidance of a parent or guardian.

2. Account and User Responsibility

  • You must provide accurate information and keep your login credentials confidential.
  • You are responsible for all activity that takes place under your account.
  • You may not create multiple accounts in order to impersonate others, manipulate reputation, or circumvent a ban.
  • Notify us immediately of any unauthorized use of your account.

3. Code of Conduct in the Beit Midrash

The Beit Midrash is a space of respect and study. By using the service, you undertake not to:

  • Post offensive, defamatory, threatening, racist, or inciteful content, or harass other learners.
  • Post spam, advertising, or content unrelated to study.
  • Infringe copyright or the rights of any third party.
  • Carry out automated actions, content scraping, or deliberately overload the system.
  • Attempt to hack, bypass security measures, or harm the integrity of the service or the privacy of users.

4. Content You Create and Ownership

The content you write, commentaries, insights, notes, and replies, remains yours. By posting content as "public," you grant the operator a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to display, store, and distribute it within the service and for the purpose of operating it. You represent that the content you post is your own or that you have the right to post it, and that it does not violate any law or the rights of others. Private notes in your personal notebook can be deleted at any time. However, content you posted as "public" is retained permanently and attributed to your name forever — as part of preserving the beit midrash and its chain of transmission — including after you close your account. Public posts cannot be deleted or anonymized.

5. Intellectual Property and Sources

The source texts in the library (Tanakh, Talmud, commentaries) are based on the Sefaria corpus and are available under Creative Commons licenses. The Babylonian Talmud is drawn from the William Davidson Talmud edition under a CC-BY-NC license. Full credit appears on the About page. The design of the service, the code, the name, and the logo are the property of the operator and may not be copied without permission.

6. Moderation and Enforcement

We may, at our discretion, hide or remove content that violates these terms, and suspend or block violating users. Moderation actions are logged for transparency and internal oversight. We strive for fair and proportionate enforcement, but we are under no obligation to monitor all content in advance.

7. Disclaimer

The service is provided "as is" and "as available." We invest effort in the accuracy of the texts, but errors, omissions, or differences in versions compared to printed editions may occur.

Community commentaries reflect the opinions of their authors alone and do not constitute a halachic ruling or binding instruction. For any practical halachic question, consult a qualified rabbi, and for any binding matter, refer to an authoritative printed source.

8. Limitation of Liability

To the extent permitted by law, the operator shall not be liable for any indirect, consequential, or incidental damage arising from the use of the service or the inability to use it, including loss of data or service interruption. The service may change, be suspended, or be discontinued from time to time.

9. Termination and Discontinuation of Use

You may stop using the service and delete your account at any time. We may discontinue or restrict access in the event of a breach of the terms, or for operational reasons, with as much reasonable notice as possible.

10. Governing Law

These terms shall be governed by the laws of the State of Israel. The exclusive jurisdiction for any dispute shall be the competent courts in Israel. If any provision is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force.

11. Changes

We will update these terms from time to time. A material change will be posted on the website, and continued use after the update constitutes acceptance of the revised version.
